REA’s February Auction Sets New Records

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) made waves in the sports collectibles scene as their recent February auction closed with a bang, raking in over $1.2 million in sales. The star of the show? A PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card that fetched a jaw-dropping $75,000, setting a new benchmark for its category and highlighting the insatiable demand for rare vintage sports cards.

But that wasn’t the only card turning heads at the auction. A Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series, graded PSA GOOD 2, shattered records for its condition by selling for $15,000. The auction drew in a multitude of registry builders and collectors, with special attention on the ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among them, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight, commanding a hefty price of $19,200, the highest ever for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in mint condition.

With a staggering total of 2,732 items up for bids, REA’s auction lineup boasted a diverse array of collectibles. Apart from the headline-grabbing Honus Wagner card, other top sellers included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background card graded PSA VG-EX 4, fetching $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig card graded PSA EX-MT 6, selling for $18,000, and a complete set of 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball cards graded PSA NM-MT 8, which went for $12,000.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed his delight at the auction’s success and the overwhelming response from the collector community. He also hinted at some exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, hinting at even more thrilling opportunities for hobbyists and enthusiasts in the near future.

This recent milestone achieved by REA not only affirms the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting journey for both collectors and aficionados. With the next Encore event slated for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA continues to cement its status as a premier destination in the world of sports collectibles.
